WRITING AND POWER

Students will be able to critically examine and act on the relationship between identity, literacy, language, and power

This examination aims to reflect my ability to critically examine the complex relationship between identity, literacy, language, and power. Through my work, I explore how language both shapes and is shaped by social and cultural dynamics, and how writing can be used as a tool to express identity, challenge dominant narratives, and navigate systems of power. The included examples demonstrate my growing awareness of how my own linguistic and literacy practices are influenced by broader structures—and how I can use writing to engage meaningfully with these realities.

To demonstrate my understanding of power dynamics in writing and rhetoric, I have included a discussion post analyzing Kerry Dirk’s exploration of genre in writing. I have also attached the feedback I received on this assignment, as it deepened my awareness of the influence language and literacy can exert in shaping meaning and authority. Additionally, my Unit 2 Reflection—also included—further examines the role of power in writing, particularly in relation to audience, context, and rhetorical choices.
